A. NITI Aayog

[National Institution for Transforming India]

  • On 15 August 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new institution in place of the Planning Commission.
  • This new institution came into existence from January 1, 2015.
  • This new institution has been named "National Institute for Transforming India" and is commonly known as 'NITI Aayog'.
  • This Commission headed by the Prime Minister will act as a Think Tank (intellectual institution) of the Government and will play the role of a policy making institution for the Central government as well as the State governments. It will also provide strategic and technical advice to the Central and State governments on important issues of national and international importance Will also advise the Government regarding the future form of Five Year Plans etc.
  • Chief Ministers and Union Territories of all states have been included in the Executive Council of NITI Aayog NITI Aayog have been made more federal than Planning Commission.
  • NITI Aayog, like the Planning Commission, is a body created by a Tenure Resolution (Central Cabinet) of the Government of India. Thus, it is neither a constitutional nor a statutory body. In other words, it is a non-constitutional body, as well as a non-statutory (not enacted by any Act of Parliament) body.
  • NITI Aayog will work for the following purposes

  • Develop a shared vision of national development priorities, regions and strategies with active participation of States keeping in view the national objectives. The philosophy of NITI Aayog will provide the framework of 'National Agenda' to encourage the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers to provide strength.
